The photo on the side shows the Dutch large copper butterfly. This endemic species (Lycaena dispar batava) is a subspecies of the large copper (Lycaena dispar), a butterfly from the family Lycaenidae (small pages, coppers and blues). This endemic subspecies lives in the marshes De Weerribben in the northwest of Overijssel and in the Rottige Meente and Brandemeer in the southwest of Friesland. In order to preserve the subspecies in the Netherlands, a protection plan has been set up by the Dutch Butterfly Conservation, which mainly provides for the expansion of the habitat. The current habitat is too small to guarantee a sustainable existence.
